The Mavericks entered the NBA in 1980 as an expansion team. During its early years the team struggled. In its fourth years, the Dallas Mavericks had their first winning season and made the playoffs, based on the play of their young stars Rolando Blackman, Derek Harper, and Mark Aguirre. the team continued to make solid draft picks and made the playoff for five years in a row starting with the 1983-84 season through the 1987-88 season. However, by 1990 Dallas had lost most of its star players to trades or free agency, and over the next decade they had a losing record every year.

Turnaround For Dallas Mavericks Basketball

Dallas was finally able to turn things around prior to the 1998-99 season with the arrival of forward Dirk Nowitzki and Steve Nash, a point guard. In 2000 Mark Cuban, an internet entrepreneur purchased the franchise and began to invest heavily into the Mavericks. As one of the most outspoken and flamboyant owners in the NBA, he upgraded the facilities of the team and Dallas became an attractive franchise for free agents. General manager and head coach Don Nelson oversaw the process of acquiring talented players. The team featured a high-powered offense that was led by Michael Finley, Nowitzki, and Nash. From 2000-2011, the Mavericks were consistently one of the Western Conference’s top teams.

Although Nash left Dallas in 2004, the Mavericks advanced to the team’s first NBA finals in 2006, but lost in six games to the Miami Heat. In 2006-07, the Mavericks had the NBA’s best regular season record, however they lost in the opening round of the playoffs to the Golden State Warriors. The Mavericks continued to be one of the better teams in the NBA and by 009-10 became only the fourth NBA team in history to post 10 seasons in a row with 50 victories at least. In 2010-11, lead by outstanding scoring in the playoffs by Nowitzki, Dallas advanced once again to the NBA finals. The won their first NBA championship by defeating the Miami Heat.

By 2012-13 the Mavericks were an aging team and posted just a .500 record, which snapped their 12-year playoff appearance streak. The following season the team was able to rebound. They won 49 games and made the playoffs, and also made the playoffs the next two season. However, during those three years, the team did not advance beyond the first round of the playoffs. By 2016-17 the roster was even more depleted and the Mavericks had its first losing season in 17 NBA seasons.
